Matt Tuiasosopo was an infielder and outfielder drafted in the 2004 draft by the Seattle Mariners. His father Manu and brother Marcus both played in the NFL. Within four years, he was up as a September call up for the Mariners. 2008 was his first season in AAA (.281, 13, 73). He spent 2009 in AAA as well (.261, 11, 35) while missing some time due to injury. His injury problems continued in 2010, where he appeared in 38 AAA games. He finally had a chance to play at the MLB level, hitting .173, 4, 11 in 50 games for the Mariners. After spending the 2011 season in AAA Tacoma (.226, 14, 77), he became a minor league free agent.
The New York Mets took a chance on Tuiasosopo, signing him to a minor league contract before the 2012 season. He played sparingly in MLB spring training, spending the entire season in AAA Buffalo (.242, 12, 57). As he hit minor league free agency, Matt saw his options diminish as no teams had an interest in bringing him to spring training. As he hit a crossroads, he wavered to take a deal to play in a team's minor league camp. He decided to contact Detroit Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski and sell him on why he should get an invitation to spring training. He presented Dombrowski with a resume and made his case, earning the spring invite. A solid spring interested manager Jim Leyland, and Tuiasosopo made the team as a reserve outfielder. So far this season, Matt Tuiasosopo is 3-7 (.429) with 1 2B and 1 RBI in 4 games. Solid story for a player hanging out in minor league camp for the Mets last spring training.
