Research shows that 4 out of every 1461 people will die on their birthday. Using the amount of days in a calendar year, it is about one out of 365 (the 4 out of 1461 includes the extra day that exists in a leap year. Over the course of history, similar to any other date, many people will pass on either their birthday, wedding anniversary, a family member's birthday- or whenever. A person who passes on their birthday now owns the day. Those who remember the deceased will never forget the day as the person has been both born on and died on the same day.
The oldest MLB player to die on his birthday was former Philadelphia Athletics RHP Sol Carter, who pitched for the Athletics in 1931, was born on December 23, 1908 and died in 2006. Next was a former Detroit Tigers and Athletics 2B (1938-1941) named Benny McCoy. He was born on November 9, 1915 and died in 2011.
Former Chicago White Sox SS Swede Risberg is known for his role in throwing the 1919 World Series against the Reds. Risberg was banned for life with the 7 other members of the "Black Sox" by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis after the 1920 season. Risberg was born on October 13, 1894 and died on the same date in 1975 at age 81. Hall of Fame and two time WS winning manager Bucky Harris was exactly 81 as well when he passed away on November 8, 1977. He was born in 1896.
1909 World Series Champion Pirates 3B and 11 year MLB veteran Bobby Byrne was born on December 31, 1884, just in time for the new year of 1885. He died on the same date in 1964, just missing the start of 1965. Former Cubs catcher and Baseball Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett was born on December 20, 1900 and passed away in 1972. Another Hall of Fame Cub, former SS Joe Tinker was born July 27, 1880 and passed away on the same date in 1948. And as mentioned in my article last week, Pirates RHP Bob Moose died just two weeks after the 1976 season ended. He had just pitched in a game on September 25, 1976 and died in a car accident on October 9th. He was born on the same date in 1947.
Finally, one of the better female baseball players, Thelma Eisen, was born and died on the same day. Known for her great speed and all around game in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1944-1952, she played for the Milwaukee Chicks, Grand Rapids Chicks, Peoria Red Wings and Fort Wayne Daisies. She was born May 11, 1922 and died this past May 11- at the age of 92.
