With the recent passing of Connie Marrero, the former Philadelphia Athletics pitcher who was 102 years old, it is a fair enough question to ask about the current oldest living MLB players. Right now, the oldest living MLB player is Mike Sandlock, who is 98 years old and played for three MLB teams from 1943-1952. The next three on the list are all 97 years old, former MLB pitcher Ray Hathaway, LF Eddie Carnett and SS Alex Monchak. Monchak played 19 games for the 1940 Philadelphia Philles and currently lives in Florida. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with him during my recent baseball trip. The remainder of the top ten living MLB players is: former Cubs SS Lenny Merullo (5), Athletics RHP Carl Miles (6), Red Sox pitcher Lou Lucier (7), Red Sox SS Bobby Doerr (8), St Louis Browns 1B Chuck Stevens (9) and Cardinals OF Bill Endicott (10). Doerr, at 96 years old, is the oldest living Hall of Famer and the only living player who traces their MLB playing days to the 1930s.
The oldest living MLB player I have had a chance to interview is Hall of Famer Monte Irvin, who currently ranks 12th on this list at 95 years old, right behind former Phillies pitcher Fred Caliguri. 13-20 consists of former Senators and Pirates pitcher Steve Nagy, Dodgers OF Luis Olmo, White Sox catcher Lee Pfund, Athletics pitcher Tom Jordan, Athletics catcher Bill Mills, Yankees pitcher Rugger Ardizoia, Athletics 1B Dick Adams and Dodgers pitcher Jean-Pierre Roy. Olmo was the first Puerto Rican player to hit a home run in the World Series (1949 Dodgers vs Yankees).
Among notables in 21-30 are former MLB OF/3B Wally Westlake (24) and former MLB 1B/ GM Eddie Robinson (25). Eddie is currently 93 years old and was recently a guest on my Passed Ball Show. From 31-50, Alvin Dark (35), Sam Mele (37), Gil Coan (41), Jim Rivera (42) and Red Schoendienst (48) all played considerable time in the big leagues. From 51-80, players like Al Rosen (57), Chuck Harmon (60), Ed Fitz Gerald (62), Bobby Brown (71), Irv Noren (72), Hal Brown (73) and Bob Cerv (80) are on the list. Hal Brown was also a guest on the Passed Ball Show.
Hall of Famer Yogi Berra currently ranks 82nd on the oldest living players list, at age 88. His 89th birthday is coming up in early May. Former MLB 2B and longtime coach Wayne Terwilliger is 84th and former MVP Bobby Shantz is currently 90th. Rounding out the list are OF great Minnie Minoso (94), former KC Athletics 1B Rance Pless, Browns RHP Ned Garver, Dodgers RHP Ralph Branca, Reds and Cubs OF Bob Borkowski, Yankees 1B Hank Workman and MLB 3B Randy Jackson is number 100 at age 88 years and 78 days.
