Are the Miami Marlins free agent plans a sham?

There has been no short of press expressing how the newly named Miami Marlins want to spend money this offseason. They want to sell tickets for their new ballpark in Miami. Started out on the right foot by bringing in a high profile, though highly controversial, manager in Ozzie Guillen. While I agree that this organization is committed to putting a playoff caliber team on the field for 2012, I think their motives are different when it comes to adding players such as Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols. I understand that they made offers to both players, and both offers were made very early in the free agent process, but did anybody expect either player to accept either of those two offers? For Reyes, 6 years and $90 million was nowhere near "Crawford money" and Pujols turned down more lucrative offers prior to spring training this year from the Cardinals. While we all understand how signing Pujols and Reyes would sell tickets for the new ballpark, I question whether the Marlins realistically had any interest in the two of them. I have started to feel that the contract offers had more to do with selling tickets than bringing in the players. It was the "buzz" of the big name players that were bigger than actually landing them. I guess we'll see how serious the Marlins are when it comes for these players to sign. Will the Marlins be in the mix when Pujols is ready to sign for 10 years and $295 million? Will the Marlins be factors when Reyes is set to sign for 6 years and $120 million? I don't see the Marlins adding $50 million a year to their payroll to just two players. I also think there is more to the feeling that Hanley Ramirez does not want to change positions. And the Marlins feel like Gabby Sanchez is more than adequate as a starting first baseman. (Obviously not a reason to not sign Pujols.) Thats why I think it was a sham that they made these contract offers in the first place. They had no intention of signing either.
In the end I see the Marlins improving themselves for next season. They will be the ones to overpay for CJ Wilson, strengthening their starting pitching and will add Francisco Rodriquez to be their closer. Casey Blake and Brandon Inge will compete for the third base job, and one of them will have a good year. They will then sign Coco Crisp to a mulityear contract to play centerfield. Though this will be considered a very good offseason for the Marlins, the fans may have been fooled into thinking they were getting players like Pujols and Reyes. I hope for their own sakes they didn't fork up the ticket money already.
