The changing of the name and uniforms have not stopped the Miami Marlins from going back to old tricks. The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003 only to dismantle the teams immediately after. The team has struggled this season after making big moves such as adding manager Ozzie Guillen, SS Jose Reyes, LHP Mark Buehrle and RHP Heath Bell. So, in year one, the team has already started unloading players, including last night's deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Marlins sent star 3B/SS Hanley Ramirez and LHP Randy Choate to LA for RHP Nathan Eovaldi and RHP Scott McGough. Two days ago, the Marlins traded 2B Omar Infante and RHP Anibal Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers for RHP Jacob Turner and a couple other young players. The Marlins have said that only Reyes and RF Giancarlo Stanton are off limits. So its safe to say other players may be moved before July 31st.
Carlos Lee was acquired a couple of weeks ago from Houston but it is very possible he could be moved. C John Buck has one year remaining on his contract, but is hitting just .177, 8, 26. They were shopping RHPs Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco, and I think they will be traded is enough interest is generated. Bell is a possibility as well, though the Marlins may have to pay some of the remaining contract.
I think Buehrle and Carlos Zambrano are likely to stay in Miami, at least throughout this season. I also see them moving relievers such as Steve Cishek and Edwin Mujica, as well as Juan Oviedo if they could. The fact that they are 12th in attendence in the NL has a lot to do with this. Even through August, the Marlins will be active shopping every valuable piece to clear some payroll.
