One drawback is the amount of errors he made throughout his career. Lets understand that players did not have the benefit of using a glove like players in the eras that have followed. But still, 975 errors is a lot, but he also had more chances among non-1B than anyone in the history of the game.
I understand that Smith made the HOF strictly on his defense and this is partly what Dahlen is being penalized for. It is for these reasons that I understand why Dahlen has not been put into the HOF. But Smith played in over 100 more games than Dahlen and Dahlen had more RS (1590-1257), 2B (413-402), 3B (163-69), HR (84-28), RBI (1234-793). Dahlen also had a higher BA (.272-.262), OBP (.358-.337), SLG (.382-.328) and of course OPS (.740-.666). Dahlen managed to have only one more career hit than Smith (2461-2460). Just something to think about.
