I'll start out with Mo Vaughn. Heres a free agent signing that ruined the team. It wasn't until he missed the 2001 season and was traded to the Mets that the Angels became good again. Is it a coincidence that they had 2 winning seasons under Collins before Vaughn arrived and won the World Series the season after he left? Absolutely not. He was the ringleader of the group that undermined the manager. He also refused to come out of the clubhouse during a bench clearing brawl, alienating his teammates. That caused tension in the clubhouse as players refused to take the field if Vaughn was in the lineup. How about Jim Edmonds? He later won at a later age with a Cardinal team that he was no longer the center of. Like Collins, Edmonds changed his ways over the years. But he was a prima donna on that team and his teammates couldn't stand him. According to some members of the team, he decided to have an operation during the season that could have waited until the offseason. How about other questionable characters in that clubhouse? Troy Percival, Gary DiSarcina, Chuck Finley and others who thought they could run the team. How about Ken Hill, Tim Belcher, Darrin Erstad and Jack McDowell? Why don't their reputations take a hit? Especially when the team quit for Collins and played hard for interim manager Joe Maddon.
