As the Toronto Blue Jays try to negotiate an extension with RA Dickey, comparisons are being made to the Mets trade in 2008 for Johan Santana. Obviously, the trades were made for different reasons. While the sentiment of the fan base may now be different, many fans are anxiously awaiting to hear about the contract agreement that will make this deal almost official. The final step will be each player taking and passing a physical, which is standard practice whenever a player changes teams.
What cracks me up is the about face made by most fans on the Santana trade. While there is complaining all the time about players signing long term contracts, it was understood that Santana would have had to sign an extension for the deal to be completed. It is easier in hindsight to say the Mets should have never made that trade. But, I will tell you this, YOU WERE IN FAVOR OF THIS TRADE IN 2008! The Mets gave up Carlos Gomez, Phillip Humber, Kevin Mulvey and Deolis Guerra for Santana.
Did this trade necessarily work out for the Twins? Gomez has not exceeded expectations and was traded to Milwaukee for JJ Hardy, who left as a free agent to sign with Baltimore. Humber threw a no hitter last season, but it was for the White Sox, the team he signed with after the Twins let him go. Mulvey signed with the Diamondbacks before making a brief appearance in the Mets system once again. If I am not mistaken, Guerra is still in the Twins system, but it has been 5 years now.
The Santana deal would have looked much better if the Mets had more success in the proceeding years. But, that cannot be changed. Point is, Twins did not win this deal either.
While Mets fans are excited to land catcher Travis dArnauld and pitcher Noah Syndergaard in this trade, it has to be understood that nothing is guaranteed. As a Mets fan, I understand that there has not been much to cheer about, especially in the offseasons since Sandy Alderson took over as General Manager. As a fan, you have the right to be happy about this trade. However, it is no slam dunk. Yes, on paper the Mets did very well. And dArnauld being in the opening day lineup should be a victory for the organization. However, Syndergaard should not be expected to be in the majors at least until the end of 2014. Remember, The Twins are still waiting for Guerra. He was the piece that made the Santana trade and has yet to pitch a major league game.
The Mets are the 2008 Twins, let's be honest the Mets wish they could be the 2008 Twins. But in this trade, the Mets are rebuilding just like the Twins were. The Blue Jays are going for it just like the Mets were in 2008. Let us hope that all the Mets fans praising this trade are right and this becomes the proper springboard to the rebuilding of this organization.
