Of course, Jose Reyes has met with the Florida Marlins and they are one of the teams interested in him. They may have or have not made him an offer. If I am wrong on what is forthcoming, please call me on this. Jose Reyes is not signing a contract right now. I could have just typed that and the announcement comes that he has signed with the Marlins. Anything's possible, but this is unlikely.
Now this doesn't mean he is not signing with the Marlins, they may be his first choice. But it would make no sense for him to sign right now. Part of free agency is to hold out for the highest most lucrative offer and take it. Not take the first contract offer right away. When a player tests free agency, especially for the first time, the dream is to get the top prize when it comes to contracts. Jose and his agent are not naive to think that half of baseball will at least inquire about his services. So to sign a deal now will be very hypocritical of Reyes and his agent who feel like a kid in the candy store with their first free agency period together.
While it is quite possible that the Marlins are the favorite to sign Reyes, lets not make Reyes and his agent foolish enough to sign a quick deal with the Marlins and ruin the chance of signing an all time contract, which has been Reyes' goal all along. He said he wants "Crawford money" according to Mike Francesa, and to sign a quick contract will probably not be such money. Its unfortunate that Mets fans will go through the ringer over the course of the next month or so, and the end does not seem to be pretty. In the end Reyes will choose whatever team is offering the most years and the most dollars. He knows he is better off waiting rather than agree to a deal now. We all know the Mets will wait and see what kind of offers Reyes is getting and then gauge their interest. And we know they will not go over a certain price. It doesn't look good for Mets fans who want to see Reyes come back. (I am one of them.) And waiting for this ordeal to be completed is going to force us to pull every hair out of our head.
