Thinking about the New York Mets and their franchise history, it is clearly a team known for their pitching. Perhaps down the road, we will be talking about the likes of Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard the same way we discuss Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Dwight Gooden and others. Throughout the 53 year history of the franchise, this team has been known for its pitching much more than its ability to score runs. The 1969 Mets were the example; and since then, many Mets teams have been known for their inability to score runs including the 4th place 2014 version.
So when we think about inability to score runs, it is easy to think about the ability to get hits. It makes sense as the two of them kind of go hand and hand. You would figure a team that struggles to score runs more seasons than not will be no hit a little more often. Though Mets have had 6 no hitters thrown against them in their history against the one they have thrown, they have not been no hit since 1993.
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies have both been no hit in the last two seasons. Prior to that, the Phillies had not been no hit since Bob Forsch on 4/16/78 and the Pirates hadn't been since Bob Gibson no hit them on 8/14/71. Of course, it was Homer Bailey who no hit the Pirates in September of 2012 and Josh Beckett who did the same to the Phillies this season. That leaves just three teams that have gone longer since being no hit than the Mets.
While the Mets will have not been no hit in 21 years on September 8th of this year, the Boston Red Sox have gone 21 years and 5 months since Chris Bosio no hit them on 4/22/1993. The next longest run belongs to the Oakland Athletics, who have not been no hit since the quartet of Orioles pitchers (Bob Milacki, Mike Flanagan, Mark Williamson and Gregg Olson) accomplished the feat on 7/13/1991. The team that has gone the longest since last being no hit is the Chicago Cubs, who are approaching 49 years since Sandy Koufax no hit them on 9/9/1965.
The Mets have been no hit by two Hall of Famers. Sandy Koufax got it started by no hitting the Mets on June 30, 1962. Jim Bunning would throw his perfect game on fathers day of 1964 (June 21st).
Bob Moose of the Pirates was on his way to a 14-3, 2.91 season in 44 games, 19 starts when he threw his only shutout of the season, a no hitter against the Mets on 9/20/1969. Tragically, just seven year later, Moose was killed in an automobile accident just over two weeks after he pitched in his last game of the 1976 baseball season.
RHP Bill Stoneman had already no hit the Phillies in 1969 at Monttreal's Jarry Park. He would duplicate the feat against the Mets on 10/2/1972. San Francisco's Ed Halicki would throw a somewhat controversial no hitter against the Mets at Candlestick Park on 8/24/1975. A ball that first ricocheted off of Halicki's shin then bobbled by 2B Derrel Thomas was scored an error as Rusty Staub reached.
The Mets would go over another 18 years without being no hit when Houston's Darryl Kile accomplished the feat on September 8, 1993. Kile would later have a tragic story of his own, as on June 22, 2002 he would be found dead in his hotel room while pitching for the St Louis Cardinals- just 4 days after he last pitched in a game.
