Ayala did not pitch at all in the majors in 2010, and in 2009 struggled with the Twins before he got released only to be picked up by the Marlins and go 0-3 with a 11.74 ERA in 10 games. Mets fans got to see Ayala in action in 2008 I watched him blow a ninth inning lead against the Braves in person as well as countless other meltdowns. Even with Washington, he was 1-8 with a 5.77 ERA before the Mets traded for him before going 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA with the Mets.
The bottom line is, because of the need for middle relief in major league baseball, Luis Ayala will get a major league contract from some team. A team will look at his stats from last season and expect it to translate in 2012. It won't. Its clear that Ayala was a much better pitcher at the beginning of his career and last year was an example of the sun shining on a dog's ass. Whatever team signs him will be sorry, especially if the team is relying on him to play a major role in their bullpen.
Hopefully the Mets are not considering bringing him back. He will be destroyed by fans like Guillermo Mota was. It wouldn't even be fair. I understand he earned a contract for next year, but why can't he re-sign with the Yankees? Or Red Sox? Or Rays, Angels or Blue Jays for that matter? I can't imagine Ayala signing with the Mets. It would just make no sense.
