The Dodgers franchise, as it applies to both Brooklyn and Los Angeles, is one of the more story franchises in National League history. Star position players and pitchers alike make the history of the team what it is today. Like many other story franchises, the Dodgers have had their share of great pitchers. In the past, names like Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Don Newcombe stand out. All you have to do is look at the Dodgers starting rotation right now which features top pictures Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. As I know I'm missing several other great pitchers, ones that come to mind Ralph Branca, Burt Hooten, Orel Hershiser Hideo Nomo and Burleigh Grimes. In my opinion, two pitchers that stand out in the history of the Dodgers franchise get little to limited recognition. Oddly enough, they span the franchise's well over 100 year history. I am talking about does Dazzy Vance and Don Sutton.
Both Vance and Sutton pitched the majority of their careers with the Dodgers organization. Either come to the forefront when the best pitchers in Dodgers history are discussed. And they probably should not be. But the bottom line is both pitchers had a very good run and should have their place in the history of the organization. Vance pitched his career in 1915, 1918 and 1922 to 1935. He spent the years 1922 to 1932 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Sutton had a longer career pitching from the years of 1966 to 1989. He spent his first 15 big-league seasons, 1966 to 1980 in LA.
Vance finished his career record at 197-140. He had a 3.24 ERA in 349 starts. For his career he pitched 2966 2/3 IP and had 2045 Ks. It is time with Brooklyn, Vance was 190–131 with a 3.17 ERA in 328 starts. He also had 212 I was 216 career complete games with the Dodgers.
Sutton made it into baseballs Hall of Fame because of the fact that he had over 300 career victories. For his career Sutton was 312 24–259 with a 3.26 ERA in 756 career starts. In 5282 1/3 IP he managed 3524 Ks. Wearing dodger blue, Sutton was 233–181 with a 3.09 ERA and 533 starts. He had 156 out of his 178 career complete games in LA.
Though neither pitcher is considered an all-time great, particularly any eyes of Dodger, fans both managed to have very productive careers. But both rank towards the top in the history of the Dodgers organization in regards to wins. Something you realize when ranking the all-time greatest pitchers in the history of the franchise.
